The most famous and talked about wedding speech
of all is undoubtedly that of the best man.
Good best man wedding speeches are well known for
being funny, even to the point of poking fun at
the groom.
The groom and bride speeches and especially the
father of the bride speech are markedly less
humorous in nature, and this is appropriate.
The best man wedding speech though is meant
to be extra witty.
So, if you’re a best man, the questions are:
How do you come up with a speech which is funny,
yet non-offensive?
What stories can you tell about the groom that will
keep your audience interested, without offending
him or making him look stupid?
There can be a thin line between funny and
insulting, so try to keep in mind that whatever
you say during the speech cannot be undone later.
The first step would be to write everything out.
Too much rehearsing can be a bad thing sometimes,
but in this case, it is essential.
Take into account the personality of the groom -
use your knowledge of his character. With a little
thought and planning, you can definitely come up
with some material which will amuse everyone and
show him in a good light at the same time.
Consider the bride – what would she want to hear
in your speech? If you’re not sure, ask her!
If you’re not sure about something, run it by
her first, or even her father or mother, brother,
sister or friend.
This may seem to go against conventional thinking,
but think about it.
You know the groom so well and likely have a great
idea of what he would like to hear [ or not ], but
can the same be said about the bride and her family?
Probably not. So, ask their opinion.
Secondly, get advice from someone who’s been there.
You can’t beat one on one advice from a battle-hardened
best man wedding speech veteran, believe me.
You need allies.
Remember, the speech is for everyone else, not
yourself. You need input from other people at every
stage.
Lastly, get a grip! Don’t let nerves get the better
of you. I find that when i’m nervous, humor calms
me down.
So, get yourself in a humorous mood, let
yourself go a bit and don’t take the whole thing
too seriously – it’s a happy occasion after all,
not a funeral!
Get a hold of a great sample wedding
speech for fantastic ideas.
Have a great day – i’m sure you’ll have a blast!
